1. Select a metal or wooden hoop. Pre-made metal or wooden hoops are easy and work great for dreamcatchers. The size of the hoop is really dependent on how big you want your dreamcatcher to be. However, if this is your first time making a dreamcatcher, try a 5 to 8 inch (13 to 20 cm) hoop; these hoops are neither too big nor too small for beginners. You can find these hoops at your local crafts store in the yarn and crocheting aisle. Embroidery hoops are another good option for dream catchers.
2. Use suede lace or ribbon to wrap the hoop. Choose leather or buckskin suede lace. The width of the lace should be no larger than the width of a shoelace. The length of the lace should be 18 times greater than the diameter of the hoop you are using. For example, if you are using a 5-inch (13 cm) hoop, then 2.5 yards (2.3 meters) of lace should be enough. If you do not want to use suede lace, then you can also use ribbon.
3. Choose string for the web. You want to use string that is strong, but flexible. Artificial sinew, hemp cord, waxed nylon string, or silk thread all work great. The length of the string should be ten times the diameter of the hoop. Traditionally, natural-colored string is used, but you can use any color you want. For example, if you are using a 5-inch (13 cm) hoop, then you will need 50 inches or 2 yards (1.8 meters) of string.
4. Pick your decorative materials. How you decorate your dreamcatcher is up to you. You can use feathers, strips of fabric, beads, gemstones, and shells to decorate your dreamcatcher. Choose materials that have personal meaning for you.

1. Fold your paper plate in half and cut the inner circle out to make your paper plate dream catcher frame.
2. Lay it over a sheet of newspaper or non stick paper and paint it to decorate.
3. Print the paper web and feathers out directly onto coloured construction paper. Alternatively you could use white paper and hand colour the feathers if you like.
4. Cut out the paper strips (you won’t need all of them for a single dreamcatcher, one sheet of printed strips will make 2-3 dream catchers).

1. To string your loom, you'll need a piece of yarn approximately 7 feet long.Holding the tail of the yarn against the back of the CD, string the yarn up through the hole, out to the edge of the CD, and down the back to the center hole again.Wind your way around the CD, evenly spacing your warp threads, and finish with an ODD number of warp threads on the CD. Make sure your threads are nice and snug and then tie your loose ends to each other or to a warp thread on the back of the CD.
2. With your needle and a new piece of yarn, start weaving at the center of the CD, in an over, under fashion. You can secure the starting tail of the yarn by trapping it underneath your weaving as you go. To change colours, simply tie on a new piece of yarn. (more detailed instructions can be found in our circle weaving tutorial)
3. Weave as far out on the CD as you want, and to finish, cut your yarn to leave a bit of a tail and with your needle, run that tail under a few of the previous rounds to hide and secure it.
4. Tie a few lengths of yarn to the bottom warp strings of your dream catcher, add a few buttons, and glue on some feathers. You can even glue some beads to your weaving like we did for our blue and green dream catcher.

What did they use to make dream catchers?

Traditionally, the Ojibwa construct dream catchers by tying sinew strands in a web around a small round or tear-shaped frame of willow (in a way roughly similar to their method for making snowshoe webbing). The resulting "dream-catcher", hung above the bed, is used as a charm to protect sleeping children from nightmares.

What is a dream catcher supposed to do?

As one might suspect, the purpose of a dream catcher is to catch dreams—that is, to trap bad or evil dreams and channel good dreams to the sleeper. Dream catchers are usually placed in a window or above the bed, allowing the good dreams to drip down the feathers onto the sleeper below.
