Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Indian Arts and Crafts Board do?

The OLE created the Indian Arts and Crafts Board Investigative Unit to enforce federal laws that protect Native American culture such as the Marine Mammal Protection Act, Archeological Resources Protection Act, and the Indian Arts and Crafts Act (IACA). Photo caption: Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland.

What was the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990?

The Act broadly applies to the marketing of arts and crafts by any person in the United States. Some traditional items frequently copied by non-Indians include Indian-style jewelry, pottery, baskets, carved stone fetishes, woven rugs, kachina dolls, and clothing.

Is there a law for Art in India?

No legislation currently regulates ART in India. In 2002, the Indian Council of Medical Research ( ICMR) laid out guidelines for surrogacy.

Who is eligible for Art bill in India?

Similar to the ART Bill, only an infertile Indian couple who have been married for at least five years and having no surviving child (with some exceptions) are eligible to altruistic surrogacy. It is still not certain as to why the existing ICMR Guidelines have been completely disregarded in the drafting of these bills.
